Another piece I wrote for my English class:

Dear Sir,

with reference to your letter in last Sunday’s Observer, I would like to comment on the new Asylum Bill. Even though the government rightly recognizes that something needs to be done about Britain’s asylum problem, the new bill starts at the wrong end. The government hopes that, through forcing the children of asylum seekers into care, the concerned families will more readily return to their countries of origin. Taking into account the risks these families took in coming to Britain, it seems apparent that most of those parents would rather leave their children in care of the government, where they would receive a good education, than returning to the miserable and mostly hopeless conditions they fled from in the first place. Many a parent would then go underground whilst staying close to their children. This will result in higher costs of looked after children, thus the government will fail to attain their main objective, which was cost cutting. On the other hand, the new asylum bill does not address the far more important question of what should be done about the people who have no right to stay in Britain. If the government had focused their energies on this problem, rather than finding the easiest way to cut cost, we could now look forward to a more appropriate asylum bill.
Thank you very much for providing us with such a well-balanced article and giving me the possibility to voice my opinion.

Sincerely yours,

David
